Running Unraid on a UGREEN NAS (DXP4800 / 6800 / 2800 Series)

UGREEN NAS devices ship with UGOS (Debian-based OS + web UI). If you want to try Unraid, you can run it from a USB stick. Unraid boots off the USB disk and doesnt affect your UGOS installation ( as long as you dont include system disk in array)

Create Unraid USB Boot Media

Download Unraid and use their tool to create a bootable USB drive. Some users can only boot into Unraid v6.0 initially. If your boot for later versions fails, create the USB boot disk for version 6 and Upgrade to the latest stable build once it’s running.

Access Ugreen Bios to enable Boot from USB disk

Plug the USB stick into your NAS and connect keyboard + HDMI monitor. Power on and wait for UGREEN logo , when you do press Ctrl + F2 to enter BIOS.

Inside BIOS:

  • Set USB Boot as the first boot device.
  • Disable Watchdog.

Save & exit.

Boot into Unraid ( Make sure you recognize Disks you are formatting)

Now when the NAS restarts, it should boot from your USB disk. Choose Unraid OS GUI or Unraid OS. You can create your array but make sure that you dont touch the system disk that has UGOS.

Switching Between UGOS & Unraid and Spare Key

Since Unraid is running off USB drives, it will keep running as long as USB is inserted. If you want to return to UGOS, remove the USB and reboot. Offcourse UGOS cannot read disks formatted by Unraid, but your UGOS installation remains safe and untouched.

Since Unraid runs off USB drive, you should also keep a spare copy of your Unraid boot. If your USB gets corrupted you can transfer your Unraid license to a new stick quickly.

That’s it your UGREEN NAS can now run Unraid, and you still have the option to switch back to UGOS anytime.
